40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast

“Celebrating 40 Years of Investing in the Dream”

The Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. proudly presents the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast on a new day, Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., at the same location: the Connecticut Convention Center. This signature annual event honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while raising vital scholarship funds for deserving African American female high school seniors in the Greater Hartford area.

Since the first Breakfast in 1985, it has grown to become one of the largest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations in Connecticut. It serves as the premier fundraising event for the Hartford Alumnae Chapter’s Cheryl A. Hickmon Scholarship Award, renamed in 2023 to honor Cheryl A. Hickmon, the 27th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., native to Hartford, and member of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter.

With nearly $400,000 in renewable scholarships awarded to over 135 talented students, this event continues to create meaningful opportunities and positively impact the future of our community.

"In silence and quietness, we hear the whispers of our God calling us higher, demanding we live humbly, act justly and allow compassion to lead us as a people and nation."

- Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III

Keynote Speaker

We are honored to welcome the renowned Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois. Known for his powerful and inspiring messages, Dr. Moss will deliver a dynamic word sure to invigorate you for 2025.

A third-generation warrior for civil and human rights, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III, has built his ministry on community advancement and racial and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois since 2008, Dr. Moss routinely preaches and practices a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.

📘 Book Signing Opportunity:
Dr. Moss’ latest book, Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Times (released November 2022), has been lauded as a “life-affirming guide to the practical, political, and spiritual challenges of our day.” Utilizing the scholarship of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Howard Thurman, alongside biblical texts, a bevy of religious traditions, Black culture, and his own personal experiences, Dr. Moss offers up a methodology on performing spiritual resistance by uniting two pillars of his ministry: love and justice. Join us for a special book signing following the breakfast!
